Jane Rule, author of Desert of the Heart, dies at 76

Jane Rule, author of Desert of the Heart, and Memory Board has died at age 76.  Desert of the Heart was made into the film Desert Hearts, one of the first widely distributed films to depict a positive female on female love affair.  The book is much more bisexual than the film because both of the two main characters are bi as well as a secondary character (the film turned one of the main characters lesbian and demphasized the bisexuality of the others.)

According to an article in yesterday's Toronto Globe and Mail, she led a bisexual life, although she identifed as lesbian after settling into a life partmer relationship with Helen Sonthoff (who died in 2000.) Read more from Toronto Globe & Mail.

Her novel, Memory Board, is quite unusual because all three main characters are senior citizens, rare to find in literature.  Its about a retired broadcaster who recconnects with his lesbian twin sister, after his wife who disapproved and didnt want her around dies.  Its very well written, touching and engaging.  I highly reccommend it.
